Little Falls

The Gorge Metro Park in Cuyahoga Falls OH is a scenic park with waterfalls and a gorge to explore. It has been a recreational haven for over a century, with trails, panoramic views, and caves to explore.

Little Falls is a spectacular waterfall that is a natural part of the Cuyahoga River. Until recently, dams were built along this section of the river to control flooding and power factories and mills.

However, these dams were removed in 2013, creating natural whitewater rapids and revealing the Little Falls. The falls are important to the health of the Cuyahoga River.

You can view the falls from a road bridge or you can walk to the base of the rocks, which are surrounded by large boulders. You can also picnic and watch local kayakers exploring the base of the falls.

Big Falls

One of the most impressive stretches of the Cuyahoga River is found in Gorge Metro Park. The gorge contains several waterfalls that were once considered to be the biggest in the region.

Unfortunately, the river has been badly polluted and many of the falls have been destroyed by dams. In early 2019, a group of stakeholders presented a plan to take down the Gorge Dam in four years.

The removal of the dam would help clean up the river and open 2.5 miles of Class III to Class V whitewater, boosting tourism in the area, officials say. The EPA, Summit Metro Parks, FirstEnergy, and the city of Akron have held several community meetings to keep the public informed on the progress of the project.

The Gorge Trail in Gorge Metro Park is a popular hike and the best part about it is that you get to see the river while you hike. Besides the apparent water flowing over the ledges, this trail also has a number of other features, including the Mary Campbell cave. More places to also visit by clicking here.

Highbridge Trail

The Highbridge Trail at Gorge Metro Park Cuyahoga Falls OH is an excellent choice for a short, easy hike that offers a scenic river view and plenty of wildlife sightings. It begins along the rim of the Cuyahoga Valley opposite Gorge and Glens Trails and provides an alternative to the more developed trails.

Hiking is a popular activity in the region, and Cuyahoga Valley National Park features many miles of hiking trails that range from family strolls to strenuous climbs. Some of the most scenic hikes are located on ledges, which offer stunning views and are popular with spring wildflower enthusiasts.

There are also a number of trails that explore the forest and cliffs of the area. These trails are perfect for families and beginners. They are easy to follow and offer a variety of different terrains.

Mary Campbell Cave

The cliff face and cave roof of Mary Campbell Cave are made of sandstone of the Sharon Formation, while the rock wall is the softer shale of the Meadville Formation. It is part of the Cuyahoga River gorge in Gorge Metro Park, straddling Cuyahoga Falls and Akron.

During the French and Indian War, 12-year-old Mary Campbell was captured by Delaware Indians and brought to the cave, where she lived as a child of Chief Netawatwees. She was released in 1764 after the treaty ended the war.

Now, a team of archaeologists and volunteers are digging around the 300 million-year-old rock shelter to try to uncover any evidence of prehistoric human habitation. They’re hoping to find arrowheads, debitage, or flakes of flint and chert.

Previously known as Old Maid’s Kitchen, the feature was used for recreation starting in the late 1800s and early 1900s. It helped bring crowds to High Bridge Glens Park, which featured a roller coaster and a dance hall. Click here for the next blog post.
